Over the past few months, there have been louder and louder calls from the right for government to pick winners and losers in the economy. J.D. Vance supported raising taxes on companies publicly opposed to new voting laws passed in red states and lowering taxes for companies that were “investing in their communities.” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton attempted to retaliate against Twitter over the company exercising its First Amendment right to moderate its platform. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law to prohibit social media companies from moderating political content — while exempting Disney.

I blame Harry…

The Greek system at Washington and Lee University creates social pressures that endanger students and run counter to the goals of an educational institution. If the Greek system at W&L proves unable to reform itself, then students must disaffiliate in order to lessen the power of Greek organizations on campus. By reducing the influence of the Greek system at W&L, perhaps even abolishing it, students can transform Washington and Lee University into a more successful institution of higher learning with an inclusive community and healthy campus culture.

Before I defend my assertions above, let me acknowledge that there is a…

The Bible does not ban sex before marriage. At minimum, there is enough ambiguity in the scriptures to warrant more nuanced conversations about pre-marital sex than simply “It’s wrong because the Bible says so.” That said, the Bible does prescribe the purposes of sex and, when its guidance is followed, makes sex a healthy and beneficial act in both Christian and secular contexts.

Let’s start with what the Bible does prohibit. Quick note, I’m using the New International Version. The book of Hebrews states, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge…

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is the most popular film right now that you have never heard of. It became the highest grossing film of all time in Japan even though it debuted last year in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Finally released in the United States, the film topped the U.S. Box Office. The over $40 million Mugen Train has so far earned in the U.S. has elevated it to the highest grossing film released in 2020, beating out both Hollywood and Chinese blockbusters. What explains Mugen Train’s success? …

Ben Shapiro exerts enormous influence on young people in the conservative movement. Shapiro hosts the most popular conservative podcast on Apple Podcasts, thirteenth most popular overall. Videos of Shapiro “shredding” leftists on college campuses accrue millions of views on YouTube. Many young conservatives who I have spoken with consider Shapiro to be the greatest debater of the 21st century. Unfortunately, Shapiro’s influence on conservative youth is toxic, as he is not an exemplar of conservatism. Rather, Shapiro is an exemplar of post-modernism.

Shapiro’s primary tools are his quick brain and quicker speech. Shapiro pummels his interlocutors with strings of sentences…

Daniel Markovits’ The Meritocracy Trap offers a startling but flawed diagnosis of America’s economic and political ills. According to Markovits, the elite in society have shored up their position by obtaining unprecedented levels of skill from the most prestigious universities, by working 80+ hours a week, and by directing government regulations and technological change to favor their high-skilled jobs over mid-skilled jobs. The elite then secure the transmission of their status to their children by investing tremendous amounts of money and time into their children’s education, resources the middle-class cannot match. …

Washington and Lee University, my alma mater, is in the midst of a deeply challenging debate about its future. The current Executive Committee supports removing Lee from our name, but multiple students opposed to such a change recently made their voices heard in the summer release of The Spectator. Many of the articles emphasized the importance of “preserving American history.” I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. In fact, the importance of preserving history is reason enough to justify removing Lee from our name.

Let me stress, there are many compelling reasons for the Board of Trustees to remove Lee from…
